School feeding programs may offer the main meal of the day for children.  Providing food fortified with vitamins and minerals at school and a rich protein base can go a long way in preventing stunted growth.

A life free from Hunger: Tackling Child Malnutrition published by Save the Children Global Report 2012, state million of Kenyan children suffers from malnutrition; poverty is one of the major underlying causes.

The major food eaten is maize, which has limited nutritional value when eaten alone.  The income level, less than $1.00 per day prevents parents from providing nutritional food to their children.  In addition, drought, the high cost of food, high fuel cost, the economic down turn, and more Kenyans leaving the farms have all contributed to an increase in chronic malnutrition since 1990.
